In his mission to combat climate change, De Blasio has vowed to cut emissions from New York's towering skyscrapers in an effort to become more energy efficient.

Mayor de Blasio (pictured) and City Controller Scott Stringer plan to sue five big oil companies charging they are responsible for global warming that has cost the city billions.

.

"The city seeks to shift the costs of protecting the city from climate change impacts back onto the companies that have done almost all they could to create this existential threat", reads the lawsuit, which was filed in the Southern District of NY.

A lawsuit has been filed against the five largest investor-owned fossil fuel companies by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio due to their contributions to global warming.

"Defendants are also responsible for leading the public relations strategy for the entire fossil fuel industry, downplaying the risks of climate change and promoting fossil fuel use despite the risks", they said.

The case will also point to evidence that firms such as Exxon knew of the impact of climate change for decades, only to downplay and even deny this in public.

New York's lawsuit echoes a similar effort on the west coast, where two California counties and a city are suing 37 fossil fuel companies for knowingly emitting unsafe levels of greenhouse gases.

In seeking to recover damages created by climate change, New York City joins a handful of California cities and counties which have already filed similar lawsuits against major fossil fuel companies.

A Shell spokesman said climate change is a complex issue that should not be addressed by the courts.

The lawsuit follows the city's announcement that it plans to divest its pension funds from fossil fuel companies.

Representatives from Exxon, Chevron, BP and Conoco did not respond to requests for comment.

In response to the California lawsuits, Exxon recently asked a federal judge in Texas to allow the company to depose municipal officials involved with the suits, arguing that depositions would allow the company to uncover "abuse of process, civil conspiracy and violations of Exxon Mobil's constitutional rights".

"New York City is standing up for future generations by becoming the first major U.S. city to divest our pension funds from fossil fuels", said Bill de Blasio, New York's mayor.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that staff will instruct fund trustees to start analyzing ways to divest responsibly from fossil fuel over the next five years. The funds invest the pensions of hundreds of thousands of active and retired city teachers, firefighters, police officers and other employees. In addition to New York City, one other non-Californian city - Boulder, Colorado - has indicated an interest in filing a lawsuit against fossil fuel companies for their role in climate change. If the opinions support the move, they'll vote on proceeding with divestment.
