Rescue crews continued to sludge through mud and debris Friday to search for missing people in Montecito after a deadly storm and flooding tore through Santa Barbara County.

NASA has released a pair of images that show the scope of disaster from the Thomas Fire and Tuesday's mudslides in Montecito, California.

Many people living in Montecito, a community just south of Santa Barbara, went to bed worry-free the night of January 8. Five people remain missing: Faviola Calderon, 28; John "Jack" Cantin, 17; John "Jack" Keating, 53; Lydia Sutthithepa, 2; and Pinit Sutthithepa, 30.

The cause of death for all is listed as "multiple traumatic injuries due to flash flood with mudslides due to recent wildfire".

Residents in the Montecito Water District - including Summerland - are still being told to boil their water.

Josephine Gower, 69, died when she was swept away in the mudslides, her daughter-in-law Sarah Gower confirmed in a Facebook post on Wednesday. Brown returned to the microphone minutes later to say a call had been received and Keating had been found at a hospital outside the area.

"This house is across the street now so we have to search these piles where people could've potentially floated into", he said. "You just don't even think that this is possible".

Singer Katy Perry, who grew up in the area and still has a home there, posted this message of support on her Instagram story on Thursday.

The cleanup was going on near where Weimer's missing parents, Jim and Alice Mitchell, lived.

Morgan Corey, 25, is still missing after the mudslides in Montecito, Calif., destroyed their family home on Tuesday.


Residents of the mudslide-hit area were assessing their damaged homes, with some grateful their properties had survived. She had lived in the city for almost 30 years.

The 281,893-acre Thomas Fire, which broke out December 4 in Santa Paula, was brought to 100 percent containment Friday, the U.S. Forest Service said. He shared the home with his partner, who owned a cafe in Santa Barbara.

Despite his home filled with water and mud, Farrell and his family found solace in the home's hallway.

County officials have already ordered residents in most of the southeastern corner of Montecito, an unincorporated community east of the city of Santa Barbara, to leave their homes for what they said was likely to be one or two weeks to aid the search and recovery efforts.

The 101, a key north-south route in California, was tentatively scheduled to reopen on Monday, but cleanup efforts have proved more hard than expected, Santa Barbara City Fire Chief Pat McElroy said on Saturday.

Jonathan Benitez, 10, was Ramos' nephew, the Washington Post said.

She says Marilyn Ramos doted on her only child, Kailly. They also loved their dog, Gigi, who is missing.
