Makar Sankranti 2018: All you need to know about the festival

In a message, the Vice President said this festival celebrated with different names all over the country, is a celebration of a positive transformation in people's lives.

Meanwhile, Pongal is celebrated from January 14 to January 16. The festival is celebrated in different ways in different parts of India. It is observed in mid-January every year. In Gujarat, it is Uttarayan, Pongal in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, Sankranti in Karnataka, Magh Bihu in Assam, Magha Mela in parts of central and north India (Maghi in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab), and as Makar Sankranti in Maharashtra.

Makar Sankranti is being celebrated across the country with much pomp and fanfare. In Gujarat, the event is celebrated as a two-day festival including Uttarayan and Vasi Uttarayan. The day marks the end of winters and beginning of spring. People gift the laddoos to each other and say "Til gul ghyaa, god-god bola" (accept this til-gul and speak sweetly).

The tradition of flying kites is considered to be healthy, as one gets exposed to the sun, early in the morning. Secondly, Makar Sankranti means that from now on days are going to be longer and the nights are going to be shorter.

The importance of Makar Sankranti and why is it celebrated?

Makar Sankranti denotes the transition of sun from the zodiac Sagittarius to Capricorn.

To mark this auspicious day, people across the country thronged the bank of river Ganga to take holy dip and offer special puja.

Makar Sankranti is also referenced in mythology. Thirdly, this is celebration time which is extremely auspicious as per the Hindu calendar.
