According to a report published by Hindustan Times, Surendera Kumar, the under-secretary of policy and legal matters at the consular, Passport and visa division of the ministry, said that the change might come into effect with the issuance of "next series" of passports.

Booklets with orange jackets would be designed by and printed at the Indian Security Press in Nasik.

The decision comes after a report by a joint panel of foreign ministry and Women and Child Development ministry officials. Currently, Indian passports are issued in three colours - white for government officers and those travelling on work allotted by the Centre, red for diplomats and blue for other citizens.

Apart from this, the ministry is also mulling changing colour of some passports of a specific category.

The government on Friday announced that it has done away with the printing of the last page of the passport. The last page of the passport will be kept empty in the new version. "...the passport holders with ECR status would be issued a passport with orange colour passport jacket and those with non-ECR status would continue to get a blue passport". So, while the passports will not show the names of the passport-holder's parents or spouse, the passport-holder's address will also be omitted from mention, meaning thereby that applicants will obviously have to furnish other documents for their address-proof.

After examining International Civil Aviation Organisation's guidelines regarding machine-readable travel documents, MEA decided that the last page of the passport booklet will no longer be printed.

All the existing passports will remain valid till their expiry dates. Since 2012, all passports have had a barcode, and by scanning this, the information can be accessed by immigration officials.

The history of passport dates back to approximately 450 BC when King Artaxerxes I of Persia issued a letter to an official named Nehemiah for travelling beyond his country to Judea, the modern day Israel.
