Federal agency returns to accepting renewal requests under DACA program

Almost 700,000 young people, known as Dreamers, were protected from deportation and allowed to work legally under the DACA program as of September 2017, Alsup's ruling said.

One of them, Sen.

An immigration reduction advocate says thus far it's been a "pretty successful" presidency for Donald Trump.

"Today I went to the White House to stand firm with President Trump ..."

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during a briefing that no deal had been reached yet. She said the White House would keep working with Congress to try to get something done.

Outside the West Wing after Tuesday's meeting Durbin told reporters, "My head is spinning with all the things that were said by the president and others in that room".

Trump said he then favors moving quickly to address even more contentious issues, including a possible pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants that is opposed by many Republicans and many of his supporters.

Other lawmakers on the issue pumped the brakes on the idea that it represented a breakthrough.

A bipartisan group of United States senators on Thursday (Jan 11) reached a tentative agreement on legislation to protect young "Dreamer" immigrants from deportation, along with other immigration policy changes, and is attempting to build support for the deal in Congress. When the White House released its official transcript Tuesday afternoon, the president's line - "Yeah, I would like to do it" - was missing.

Lindsey Graham of SC and Dick Durbin of IL, agreed on a plan to shield hundreds of thousands of immigrants protected under DACA from being deported. It also would dramatically boost border security and immigration enforcement. "Nothing to report yet", Marter said. The agreement would reportedly help DACA beneficiaries stay in this country, though details were unclear. The US president tweeted twice in September supporting the program, resulting in a classic Trump versus Trump situation.

GOP leaders questioned whether the plan would ever get the full support of Congress.

With few voices left at the negotiating table, anti-immigration voices on Capitol Hill and around the country are scrambling to find what if any leverage they have left in the debate over the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

They have put on hold separate talks on a potential deal on spending that would uncork tens of billions of dollars in higher Pentagon spending this year alone, along with money sought by Democrats for domestic programs.

"Just because the Gang of Six or gang of whatever agrees to something, it's going to have to be vetted by the other members", Louisiana's Sen. Republicans had long fought perceptions that the two issues were tied together, but they're dropping that pretense now. On the morning of December 29, he tweeted "The Democrats have been told, and fully understand, that there can be no DACA without the desperately needed WALL at the Southern Border and an END to the awful Chain Migration & ridiculous Lottery System of Immigration etc".

A honest immigration debate that leads to fixes for an antiquated and broken system would be a welcome development.

A Republican with knowledge of Thursday's meeting said the White House hastily invited Cotton to join the immigration discussion. Top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi of California was dismissive as well. "Except perhaps to delay?" "I am hopeful that we can make some real progress on solving this problem".

Trump sat down with senators and congressmen at the White House to discuss a proposed bipartisan deal that would limit immigrants from bringing family members into the country, and restrict the green card visa lottery in exchange for shielding hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation.
