His complaint was that due to demonetisation and the subsequent imposition of Goods and Services Tax (GST), his transport business suffered a huge loss.

Prakash Pandey, who lived in Haldwani, collapsed on Saturday at the Bharatiya Janata Party office in Dehradun, when state Agriculture Minister Subodh Uniyal was holding a public meeting.

Dehradun: Hundreds of Congress members took to the streets on Wednesday to protest the death of debt-ridden transporter Prakash Pandey.

"We have just been informed that Mr Pandey passed away at Max Hospital". "The matter has brought to fore the insensitivity of the Centre and the state government".

Chief medical officer of Dehradun, Y S Thapliyal, said that prima facie it appeared that Pandey had ingested poison which led to organ failure.

In his letter, he said that his business suffered huge losses after demonetisation and GST. He had also written letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Uttarakhand chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat in the past few months. However, his pleas fell on deaf ears.

Blaming the government for the death of Pandey, his cousin Umesh Niklani said, "My brother did not take his life, it was the system that murdered him".

Pandey said he was unable to pay his children's school fee.

Uniyal had said Pandey's action "looks politically motivated", The Indian Express reported. "Pandey represented scores of people struggling to support their families". He then apparently drank poison from a pouch and shouted that the state government had delayed his payments.

"My debts have increased manifold due to demonetisation and the way GST was implemented".
