Citing Court Order, Trump Administration Resumes Accepting DACA Renewal Applications

The program granted temporary protection from deportation to hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S.as children, often referred to as "dreamers". Those whose DACA protection expired prior to September 5, 2016 will not be able to file for a renewal.

The federal government has begun accepting requests for renewals under the DACA program again, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. At a minimum, members would like to see these principles included: a permanent legislative solution for DACA recipients, increased border security measures, and reforms to address the backlog of immigration cases in our courts. "Catholic Charities will resume our weekly DACA renewal clinics and will continue our unconditional support of the DACA community".

But a federal judge in San Francisco halted that plan late Tuesday and ordered the administration to resume processing DACA renewals while a lawsuit against the September decision moves forward.

"This week, President Trump provided leadership on a hard issue that our nation has faced for decades and Main Street members want to help the president address our broken immigration system", said U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.), Chairman of the Republican Main Street Caucus.

Meanwhile, advocates applauded the announcement as they planned ways to help DACA recipients apply for renewals as soon as possible. The agency will not be accepting new applications from immigrants who may have been eligible for the program, but never applied.

Trump promised to end the program during the presidental campaign, and in announcing it was being phased out, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions called it an unconstitutional circumvention of Congress.

Alsup said the reasoning to end the program was based on a misinterpretation of the law and voided the president's decision.
