He spends his life trying to do good works, yet is pursued by Inspector Javert (Oyelowo) for a parole violation.

The 19th Century book is being adapted by Andrew Davies, who worked on 2016's War and Peace starring James Norton and 1995's Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

Selma star David Oyelowo will play Valjean's nemesis Javert, with Erin Kellyman (Eponine) and Olivia Coleman also set to play prominent roles in the new drama.

"Jean Valjean is one of the great characters in world literature", West said.

She'll be joined by Adeel Akhtar (The Night Manager) as her husband Monsieur Thénadier as well up-and-coming British actors Ellie Bamber and Josh O'Connor as young lovers Cosette and Marius.

Filming starts in February in Belgium and Northern France.

Are you excited to see Oyelowo, Collins and West star in the BBC miniseries?

David Oyelowo said: "To play an iconic role like Javert is any actor's dream, but to play it as written by Andrew Davies goes beyond my wildest dreams".

In announcing the production, "Masterpiece" said, "Davies will go back to the original novel and delve deep into the many layers of Hugo's story, revelling in Jean Valjean and Javert's cat-and-mouse relationship, against the epic backdrop of France at a time of civil unrest". Weinstein TV was a co-producer when the production was first announced and was set to distribute in the US and China.

The series will now be produced as a collaboration between BBC Studios, Lookout Point and BBC Worldwide.

Set in 1832, the production will draw from Hugo's novel rather than the musical version of the story, which hit the big screen in 2012 with Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway among the stars.
