African Union slams 'hurtful, upsetting' Trump remark

"I've never seen a statement like this by African countries directed at the United States".

U.S. President Donald Trump boards Air Force One upon departure from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, U.S., January 12, 2018.

The group's mission in Washington DC expressed its "shock, dismay and outrage" and said the Trump administration misunderstood Africans.

Moussa Faki Mahamat the African Union Chairperson tweeted last night: "I am appalled by the unfortunate remarks attributed to the President of the United States on migrants from African countries, Haiti and Salvador".

Many of those troops are based at a United States base in the East African country of Djibouti.

Botswana's government on Friday condemned Trump's reported disparaging remarks about developing countries, calling on the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union and all other progressive nations across the world to strongly condemn the remarks.

The outcry over Trump's remarks dominated news coverage on Friday and has complicated efforts to reach a deal on immigration.

Mr. Trump has denied using that language but others present say he did.

"You can not dismiss entire countries and continents as "shitholes", whose entire populations who are not white, are therefore not welcome", said Rupert Coleville, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Several African leaders, ambassadors and different dignitaries have expressed shock and pain following President Trump's comments. But it emphasized that such a partnership should be based on mutual respect and accepted worldwide principles of respect of basic human dignity.

"The African Union condemns the comments in the strongest terms and demands a retraction of the comment as well as an apology to not only Africans but to all people of African descent around the globe", it said. We are certainly not a "shithole country".

"Please don't confuse the #s***hole leaders we Africans elect with our handsome continent ..."

Mr Trump was said to have told them that instead of granting temporary residency to citizens of countries hit by natural disasters, war or epidemics, the United States should instead be taking in migrants from countries like Norway.

She said the ANC was not in a position to stop any president from any country from saying anything they wish.

The US Embassy in Accra, Ghana also took to twitter to reaffirm America's reverence for Africans.
