My first ever worldwide medal.

The 21-year-old Manali-born girl sealed the medal in the slalom race category. The event was organised by the Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS), the skiing's global governing body. It was held from January 6 to January 9. Delighted with her win, Aanchal said that it was a result of months of training. "I started well and managed to take a good lead, which helped later in getting the third-place finish", she told The Times of India.

Aanchal hails from Burua, a village in Manali, Himachal Pradesh.

Aanchal is said to have learned skiing from her father, and later was trained by Olympian Heera Lal. "This is a breakthrough for the sport in India and the entire skiing fraternity is proud of her achievement", Roshan Thakur told the Times of India.

Anchal has until now mostly depended either upon her father for funding, or the FIS, that, mostly finances her trips.

However, her father, Roshan Thakur, who is the secretary-general of the Winter Games Federation of India, rues the lack of financial and infrastructural support from the government.

"Aanchal called me on WhatsApp and showed me the medal".

Her feat has not gone unnoticed, and she was praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Well done @alleaanchal for winning an global medal in skiing!". The competition had been organized by the International Governing body, Federation International de ski (FIS), in Turkey, at the Palandoken Ski Centre.

Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore was also among the first ones to send across his best wishes.

Earlier in 2012, when Aanchal was only 16, she had represented India at the Winter Youth Olympics organised at Innsbruck, Austria.
