Trump on Wednesday ended his investigation into voter fraud, which he has repeatedly claimed without evidence is the reason Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a statement laying responsibility for the commission's demise on the many states that refused to provide voter data "despite substantial evidence of voter fraud", and also on the cost of ongoing lawsuits challenging the commission.

Trump has alleged that between 3 million and 5 million illegal votes were cast in the 2016 presidential election in which his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, garnered almost 3 million more overall votes, though Trump won a majority in the electoral college.

The panel, headed by Vice President Mike Pence, was established in May past year to look into voter fraud but met with resistance from many states.

Trump spiked the commission late Wednesday amid infighting and refusals by numerous states to cooperate, but at the same time transferred its mission to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Critics say that can make it harder for some people, including minorities, to vote because they are less likely to have certain IDs. Trump won the Electoral College, giving him the White House, but he lost the popular vote to Clinton by nearly 3 million votes. Trump's statement gave no indication what could happen to the sensitive voter files in the commission's possession, which the GAO said number in the tens of millions.

The group's first action was to ask states for detailed voter data, including the names, addresses, birthdates, partial Social Security numbers, party affiliation, felon status and other data for every registered voter. State election officials rejected requests for their voter rolls as invasions of privacy.

DHS could have broad legal authority to conduct an investigation into Trump's unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud.

Kris Kobach, Kansas' secretary of state, announced Thursday that Bailey Ann McCaughey and Que J. Fulmer are facing accusations involving voter fraud.

One of the members of the commission, Democratic Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, sued the commission in federal court, alleging it had violated federal law by refusing to provide him documents available to other members, among other charges.

President Donald Trump tweeted on Thursday morning about the end of his voter-fraud commission, blaming states for refusing to hand over voter data.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the commission "a front to suppress the vote" and to "perpetrate unsafe and baseless claims" on Wednesday night.

But Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, a Democrat and vocal critic of the commission, said it is "preposterous" for any review of Trump's "false claims" to continue.

Dale Ho, director of the American Civil Liberties Union Voting Rights Project, accused the commission of engaging in "a wild-goose chase for voter fraud, demonizing the very American voters whom we should all be helping to participate - with the not-so-secret goal of making voting harder with unnecessary barriers".
