UFC champion Georges St-Pierre is out indefinitely with ulcerative colitis

With his immediate future already in question following a neck injury suffered at UFC 217, Georges St-Pierre has a new hurdle to clear before he can return to the Octagon.

"The diagnosis is ulcerative colitis and I am now taking medication that will hopefully appease the symptoms", St-Pierre, 36, wrote on his official Facebook page. "My health is my #1 priority right now, I'm still a very happy man, thanks for your support!"

St-Pierre managed to put together one of the most fairytale-esque returns imaginable when he defeated Michael Bisping at UFC 217 after almost four years on the sidelines.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic, inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. The night, as a whole, was one of the most memorable occasions in the sport's history, but for St-Pierre to recapture UFC gold in such stunning fashion allowed him to leave Madison Square Garden that night with the bulk of the praise on offer.

The news has also unfortunately fueled the flames of those who believed St-Pierre did not intend to defend the middleweight title in the first place because even if he wanted to, he could not for an indefinite period of time regardless.

Due to the recently diagnosed medical condition, there is no time frame as to when the middleweight champion will return to action.

"There was a lot of people, they were doubting me in my entourage ... even my family. They actually called me yesterday, and I think it's out that he has colitis", White said.

But with St-Pierre now out indefinitely and the UFC hosting a pay-per-view event in Perth, Australia, in February, it's entirely plausible that the Aussie champion will be tasked with fighting somebody not named St-Pierre on that card. His first three titles came as a welterweight.
