U.S. cop jailed for 20 years in fatal shooting of black man

He said that Slager and Scott had physically struggled before the shooting, and that explained the officer's state of mind. Slager shot Scott in the back five times as he ran away from a traffic stop in April 2015. "Slager's actions were disproportional to Scott's misconduct".

Michael Slager, a white officer in SC, was filmed shooting 50-year-old Walter Scott as he fled after Slager stopped him for having a broken brake light in April 2015.

The shooting, which occurred less than a year after the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in Staten Island, New York, sparked a national debate over the violence white police officers use against African-Americans after eyewitness videos of the incidents went viral.

Walter Scott's mother, Judy, holds up a photo of him as she walks to the media tents pitched outside of the courthouse in downtown Charleston.

What it did capture, though, is Slager repeatedly firing at Mr Scott as he was attempting to run away.

"I miss my father every day", Miles Scott told the judge through tears.

After the shooting, Slager picked up his stun gun and placed it next to Scott.

Slager then gave authorities false information about the circumstances of the shooting, the judge added at the sentencing hearing in a Charleston federal court.

Slager pleaded guilty in May to violating Walter Scott's civil rights when he shot the unarmed, fleeing motorist five times in the back following a traffic stop.

Scott's son Miles urged Norton to impose the "strongest sentence" on Slager.

The mother of a slain black motorist says she forgives the white former SC police officer who killed her son. "I'm not angry at you, Michael", he said in court. "You can come to Jesus, just as you are and he will forgive you". The judge "ruled that Slager committed second-degree murder and obstruction of justice", according to ABC News.

SC has been aggressive in charging white officers who shoot unarmed black people.

The officer, who was sacked after the shooting, "acted out of malice aforethought, shooting dead an unarmed and fleeing Walter Scott", Judge David Norton said Thursday.

The ruling comes as part of federal sentencing proceedings for Michael Slager.

The judge also found that Slager, 36, obstructed justice when he made statements to state police after the shooting. "As I get older my dad will never see me or his future grand kids".

For three days, attorneys representing the federal government and a former SC officer charged in an unarmed black motorist's shooting death have presented technical testimony to a judge considering how much time Michael Slager should spend in federal prison.

Outside of the courthouse, Walter Scott's older brother, Anthony, said that it took him the longest out of anyone in the family to forgive Michael Slager. The video also shows Slager dropping an object next to Scott's body after the shooting, which prosecutors argued was proof that Slager planted evidence on Scott.

An emotional Slager told the Scott family that he was grateful for their forgiveness.
