Female priest and another woman fatally stabbed at Tokyo shrine

Kyodo news agency reported there was some kind of confrontation between the priestess and her brother, named as Shigenaga Tomioka.

A man stabbed his older sister and girlfriend to death before committing suicide at a shrine in Koto Ward on Thursday, according to Tokyo Metropolitan Police, reports the Asahi Shimbun (Dec. 8).

The 58-year-old Nagako was later pronounced dead with a "deep" stab wound to her chest along with a laceration to the back of her neck.

Police have been searching for the attacker.

Nagako Tomioka's driver, 33, was also seriously injured in the attack.

Shigenaga Tomioka, 56, and an accomplice were hiding behind her house, police said.

The accomplice attacked the driver with a samurai sword and pursued him as he ran out of the temple grounds and about 300 feet down a road, police said. The brother then appears to have killed his accomplice before taking his own life.

The almost 400-year-old Tomioka Hachimangu shrine is known for its close ties to sumo and holding one of Tokyo's three big Shinto festivals. The injuries to his shoulder and chest were not life-threatening.

Police said the attacks had been captured by nearby security cameras and that two survival knives and two Japanese swords had been left at the scene.

According to an acquaintance of a family member, Shigenaga was the chief priest of the shrine until he was dismissed about 10 years ago.

The shrine, established in 1627, is known for its annual Fukagawa Hachiman festival, one of Tokyo's three major festivals from the Edo period.

Nagako and Shigenaga are known to have fought over the succession rights at the shrine, local media said.
