The Las Vegas firefighters said that Angulo's quick actions "certainly saved the children's lives", describing him as "a true hero".

Anival Angulo heard children screaming and saw smoke coming from an apartment on Friday.

Tim Szymanski, with Las Vegas Fire and Rescue, said,"If he hadn't been there, these children probably would've died, and it would've ruined everybody's holiday".

She couldn't open the steel door, so Angulo, 36, pulled on it until the dead-bolt unlatched.

A homeless man rescued two children from a burning east Las Vegas apartment building Friday afternoon, according to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

He pulled both children out. "I wrapped up the babies and pulled them out".

Officials say the grandfather couldn't get to the children because of the fire. "I knew I had to get them out".

The fire, which started on a pan with cooking grease, destroyed the kitchen and living room and caused extensive smoke damage throughout the apartment, officials said.

The department said without Angulo's help, the children would have likely suffered severe smoke inhalation and burns.

Crews were dispatched about 11:30 a.m.to multiple 911 calls at a four-unit complex in the 2600 block of Mesquite Ave., near Eastern Avenue and Bonanza Road, officials said.

The American Red Cross is assisting three adults and one child displaced by the fire.

Szymanski added: "It's obvious if [Angulo] hadn't been there, these children could've been burned or may have been killed in the fire".
