Kentucky Lawyer Captured in Honduras Pleads 'Not Guilty' to Escape Charges

After being captured in Honduras, fugitive Kentucky attorney Eric Conn pleads not guilty in federal court

"I never thought they would catch him".

"It was quite a gamble that he took" by allegedly escaping, White said.

The indictment charges Conn and Wyatt with one count each of conspiracy to escape and one count each of conspiracy relating to Conn's failure to appear for his sentencing.

The Kentucky attorney responsible for the biggest social security scam in US history appeared in federal court Wednesday.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Amy Hess said at a news conference Tuesday, Conn was captured in the Central American country on Saturday.

Conn who pleaded guilty to orchestrating a more than $500 billion social security fraud scheme went missing back in June after the Federal Bureau of Investigation says he cut off his electronic monitor.

Conn is also facing charges in a separate case relating to a bond violation.

White said Conn started serving his 12-year sentence as soon as he was transferred to the custody of the US government.

Conn was handcuffed and wore blue jeans and a blue jacket Tuesday evening as he arrived back in Kentucky at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, according to media reports.

As reporters shouted questions at him, Conn said: "It's good to be home", according to WSAZ-TV.

Conn pleaded guilty in March to charges of theft of government money and payment of gratuities, but fled in June, after he had been placed under house arrest with a Global Positioning System ankle monitor.

Fugitive Eric Conn, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to defrauding Social Security for half a billion dollars, couldn't resist signing onto the internet while on the lam in Honduras. But his empire crumbled when authorities discovered he had been bribing a doctor and judge to approve disability claims based on fake medical evidence.

"That's wonderful", said Donna Dye, whose husband was among Conn's clients in Appalachia.

But for hundreds of families in Eastern Kentucky and in West Virginia, the painful legacy of Conn's scam will linger for years. "There have been 1,500 hearings, approximately, and 800 of my clients are going without".
