'Grave provocation': North Korea condemns air-war games

From the USA side, White House national security adviser HR McMaster told a conference in California on Saturday that the chances for war on the Korean Peninsula grow daily.

"I think it's increasing every day, which means that we are in a race to be able to solve this problem", he said at a forum on Saturday.

"In this context, we call on all sides to immediately begin work on finding a formula for political and diplomatic settlement", he said.

"There are ways to address this problem short of armed conflict, but it is a race because he's getting closer and closer, and there's not much time left", he said. His comments came three days after North Korea carried out its first ballistic missile test in two months, in defiance of United Nations resolutions.

The Trump administration has vowed to deny North Korea the capability of striking the USA homeland with a nuclear-tipped missile. "But what we want to do is convince others, it is in their interest to do more", McMaster said.

On Wednesday, North Korea tested a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that can fly over 13,000 km (8,080 miles), placing Washington within target range, South Korea said on Friday.

Michael Kirby, chairman of the U.N. Commission of Inquiry that drew up the report, said at the time that the crimes the team had cataloged were reminiscent of those committed by the Nazis during World War Two.

Reiterating past remarks, the official said one step was to conduct an above-ground nuclear detonation or "large-scale hydrogen bomb" test. "And whether it's a success or failure isn't as important as understanding that over the years he's been learning from failures, improving, thereby increasing his threat to all of us".

"We feel very strong that it (the North's nuclear development) needs to be stopped and we are obviously not looking for a military solution ourselves", he said.

After the test, North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un proudly announced it had "now finally realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force". Bessho said Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono will chair the meeting and several ministers and deputy ministers, whom he refused to name, are also expected.

However, he added: "It is impossible for us not to condemn the provocations by our American colleagues".

Bessho emphasised the importance of linking the human rights concerns to the security threats that are impacting the people there, as well as the Korean Peninsula and beyond.

Six of the U.S. Air Force's advanced stealth fighter jets reportedly arrived in South Korea on Saturday for joint air drills and war rehearsals scheduled next week in a show of force against North Korea.
