Getting closer, but more work to be done on Brexit deal

Mr Juncker said he will recommend that negotiations be broadened to future relations and trade.

After a tumultuous day which saw a choreographed attempt to showcase the progress of Brexit talks thwarted at the last minute, May will try to gauge on Tuesday what her supporters in Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) might accept.

Sterling rose while the euro edged down on Friday as British, Irish and European Union officials finally clinched a deal to unlock the current Brexit impasse.

British Prime Minister Theresa May and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker discuss the agreement in Brussels on Friday.

The party's opposition on Monday led to talks breaking down.

A spokesman for PM May said Brexit discussions were ongoing while a senior Irish official that talks were moving swiftly and that a deal was possible in hours.

"We stand ready to receive Prime Minister May at any moment in time when they are ready", Schinas said, but warned: "This will have to have to happen this week".

"We believe there is still more work to be done to improve the paper".

Britain and the European Union have only days to clinch a deal on borders, Britain's financial settlement with its European Union partners and the rights of citizens hit by Brexit before a December 14-15 European Union summit that will decide whether Brexit talks can move on to future relations and trade.

EU President Donald Tusk had triggered fevered speculation on Thursday about a deal when he announced that he would make a press statement on the Brexit talks at 0650 GMT on Friday. But, had it gone ahead, a regulatory deal for Northern Ireland would also have created important economic differences with the other United Kingdom nations.

With the clock ticking down to the March 2019 exit date, the report says the biggest risk factor that there may be no trade deal is the shortage of time.

Mrs May has said she wants a deep and special partnership and a better deal than the free-trade agreement that Canada secured from the EU.

"We will guarantee there will be no hard border", May said Friday morning.

Mrs May's Conservative administration is fiercely divided over Brexit - her Cabinet has yet to decide what kind of trading arrangements it wants from Europe.
