Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Wray rejects Trump criticism

"We've seen the attacks on legislative oversight, intelligence agencies, the judiciary, journalists".

That description is a far cry from how the president described the agency on Sunday, when he said "its reputation is in Tatters - worst in History!" in a tweet. A few months later, as Comey looked into possible collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign to swing the USA presidential election, the president fired Comey.

Wray's testimony comes after the FBI has been the target of scornful attacks from President Donald Trump and some other Republicans who have alleged that special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible links between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation during last year's presidential election is politically biased. "What I can tell you is the Federal Bureau of Investigation I see is tens of thousands of agents and analysts and staff working their tails off to keep Americans safe from the next terrorist attack; gang violence; child predators; spies from Russia, China, North Korea and Iran". But he conceded that agents do make mistakes, adding that there are processes in place to hold them accountable. Rep. Jim Jordan grilled FBI Director Christopher Wray this morning on the suspected actions of an FBI agent found to have sent anti-Trump text messages to his mistress.

Wray also faced questions about potential legal trouble for Trump personally arising from Mueller's investigation.

"Your responsibility is not only to defend the bureau but to push back against the president when he is so clearly wrong, both on the facts and as a matter of principle", Mr Nadler told Mr Wray. The firing of James Comey exacerbated the situation, and made Wray's tenure even more challenging.

The CNN host played a clip of Trump praising former FBI director James Comey over the bureau's investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server.

Mr Wray repeatedly deflected questions about the FBI's handling of the Clinton email investigation, saying the entire matter was under review by the justice department's inspector general.
