Blundell came to the crease on Sunday morning on 57 not out and with number 11 Trent Boult at the other end as his batting partner.

The West Indies compared the big-hitting de Grandhomme to their own whirlwind stars Chris Gayle and Andre Russell as the New Zealander smacked the ninth-fastest Test century of all time, making light of a tiring attack and plundering the boundary.

The 31-year-old's aggressive hundred, in only his seventh Test following his debut a year ago, came from just 71 deliveries and propelled the Black Caps to a massive 447 for nine in their first innings on day-a massive lead of 313 runs with three days left in the contest.

Tom Blundell scores maiden test century on debut for the Black Caps on home ground in Wellington.

De Grandhomme's hundred is the fastest recorded innings for a maiden Test hundred.

De Grandhomme and Blundell put on a seventh-wicket partnership of 148 for the seventh wicket which went at almost six an over.

First-day bowling hero Neil Wagner was bowled for three and then Matt Henry was caught behind for four.

The wicket has browned off from the green cover on day one when the West Indies were rolled for 134 in their first innings.

Resuming the day at 85/2, New Zealand lost the wicket of overnight opener Jeet Raval (42) before Taylor and Nicholls consolidated the innings to take it to 181/3 at the lunch break. He was trapped lbw by Kemar Roach for 93 when the Windies successfully reviewed the initial not out call.

Left-hander Nicholls earlier had a life on 24 when he was caught behind off Jason Holder, but the replay showed Holder had overstepped the mark and Nicholls went on to score his fifth Test fifty.

Mitchell Santner was then bowled by Cummins for 17 at 281 for six, leaving the Windies with the ideal opportunity to limit the hosts.

Senior batsman Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls set the stage for an all-out attack with their 127-run stand for the fourth wicket which led to de Grandhomme and Tom Blundell adding 148 for the seventh.

West Indies: Kraigg Brathwaite, Kieran Powell, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Sunil Ambris, Shane Dowrich (wk), Jason Holder (c), Kemar Roach, Miguel Cummins, Shannon Gabriel.

Roach was the most successful of the West Indies bowlers with three for 73 while Cummins and Chase got two wickets apiece.
