Brush fire north of Los Angeles forces evacuations

Although they expect violent wind gusts, crews battling the Creek Fire in the hills above Sylmar will try to gain momentum Thursday against a wind-driven blaze that has destroyed or damaged 30 homes and threatened thousands of others. That is double the containment figure from Wednesday. Although numerous homes were charred on Tuesday, firefighters were still dousing hot spots that flared up on Thursday morning.

Evacuations were also issued for Arroyo Street north of the 210 Freeway and areas of Maclay, Pocoima Wash west of Sayre Street and Eldridge, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart stated in an update.

LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas warned that the battle was likely to continue until at least Friday. The Los Angeles Police Department was on a citywide tactical alert, which allows commanders maximum flexibility in deploying resources.

As the fire expanded and jumped south of the Foothill Freeway on Tuesday, so did the mandatory evacuation area.

But by early afternoon, the eastern border of the evacuation area had enlarged to the Haynes Canyon area.

Some voluntary evacuations were recommended in the general area, including east of Veterans Park to Pacoima Canyon; Between Sayre and Polk streets north of the 210 Freeway; and between Polk and Bledsoe streets. Hansen Dam Recreation Area was also being used as an evacuation center for large animals.

Horses and other large animals can be brought to the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds at 2551 W. Avenue H, in Lancaster. For small animals, shelters were in place at West Valley Animal Shelter, 20655 Plummer St., and the East Valley Animal Shelter, 14409 Vanowen St. Eater learned of a few restaurant closures in the area, including the Hideaway Bar and Grill in Sylmar, which is directly in the fire's perimeter.
