NATION-NOW Facing an ethics probe into sexual harassment claims Rep. Trent Franks announces he will resign Arizona Rep. Trent Franks to resign

Franks' office said he will make an announcement soon.

"If this turns out to be true, there won't be that many people who are surprised", the Arizona Republican said, according to the report. "The statement will explain".

Politico's Jake Sherman reported on Thursday that Franks was the subject of attention on the House floor. He's also a member of the conservative Republican Study Committee.

Biggs and Schweikert both declined to discuss Franks.

It was not immediately clear why Franks was resigning.

He closely considered a run for Senate in 2012, dropping out suddenly in a manner that fueled speculation in Arizona political circles about a potential issues with his personal life. He served a term in the state House in the 1980s.

He supported President Donald Trump a year ago, even in the wake of the "Access Hollywood" tape, by saying Trump's words, while bad, did not compare to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's support of abortion rights.

Roll Call is reporting that Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) will step down from his seat in the near future. The general election must be held no less than 50 and no more than 60 days after the primary.
