New Oregon State head coach (and former Washington assistant) Jonathan Smith announced on Thursday that Riley will be joining his staff in Corvallis and Riley will serve as an assistant head coach.

"Current and former players thriving in the National Football League and in life are proof of Coach Riley's tremendous ability to recruit outstanding young men", Smith said in a statement.

Riley, 64, first coached Oregon State in 1997 and 1998 before heading to the then San Diego Chargers as head coach for three seasons.

Mike Riley's exit as the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers was seemingly a long time coming and it finally became official in late November. After leaving Oregon State, Riley was then called on to be the Nebraska head coach in 2014, and was sacked after this this past regular season.

"Current and former players thriving in the National Football League and in life are proof of Coach Riley's tremendous ability to recruit outstanding young men", Smith said in a statement. It's nice to see him back in Oregon. Bray was Nebraska's linebackers coach and he served as the interim head coach for a week before the Huskers hired Scott Frost. "He understands what it takes to win in this conference, and how to evaluate student-athletes". OSU has allocated a salary pool of $3.3 million annually for assistant coaches. He was sacked following the season and replaced by Scott Frost. Other new coaches include Jim Michalczik, Brian Lindgren, Jake Cookus, and Mike McDonald (strength and conditioning). His 93 wins are the most for a head coach in program history.
