Professor Josh Slater, Chair of BEVA's Health & Medicines Committee said European Antibiotic Awareness Day was an excellent time for the profession to reflect on its successes in improving antibiotic prescribing and also an opportunity to plan for future improvements in antimicrobial stewardship.

"I'd urge healthcare professionals and residents to make the pledge and become an antibiotic guardian, and for people to think twice about taking antibiotics unless they have specifically been prescribed them by their GP".

The issue is a concern to health agencies around the world as growing numbers of infections - such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, gonorrhoea, and salmonella - are becoming harder to treat as the antibiotics used to treat them become less effective. For animal health, the best way to reduce antibiotic use is to promote farm management aimed at preventing infection through good practices in livestock production, aquaculture farming and crop production. It occurs when bacteria develop resistance to an antibiotic treatment, which may be caused by overuse of the drugs or improper prescribing - such as prescribing antibiotics for a viral infection.

The responsible use of antibiotics will be in the spotlight this weekend as European Antibiotic Awareness Day is marked this Saturday, and it has the support of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA).

"Antibiotic resistance is a global crisis that we can not ignore", says Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of WHO.

As a part of the regional campaign to stop the misuse of antibiotics, the WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific, Dr Shin Young-soo has launched the race to one million pledges to stop AMR. The most important antimicrobials are antibiotics, which treat bacterial infections.

Since they were first marketed in the 1940s, antibiotics have helped to revolutionize modern healthcare, offering cures to previously untreatable infections.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Agricultural Research Centre are focal institutions in the area of AMR for human and animal health sectors respectively, and are leading the initiative in collaboration with the World Health Organization to curb irrational use of antibiotics, Saira stated.

"The implementation of the national AMR action plan will also be presented".

Katinka de Balogh is senior animal production health officer for Asia and the Pacific at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

The FAO, WHO and OIE have pooled resources and efforts to address antimicrobial resistance across the human, animal and ecosystem domains following the so-called "One Health Approach".
