The starting line for the 122nd Annual YMCA Turkey Trot is on Delaware Avenue and setup was underway as the 9 a.m. start time approached.

The annual United Way Turkey Trot stepped off Thanksgiving morning for the ninth consecutive year at Daffin Park.

This 5K run has come a long way from its humble beginnings. "On a day like Thanksgiving where it's about gratitude for the people around you, it's nice to just feel that sense of community and go do something together".

"To me, it's fantastic to see so many people getting behind such a great cause and getting together, friends, family, people have made it a tradition and they come out every year", Skolfield said.

In the Turkey Trot 5K race, Alec Gironda won the men's division in 17:53 and Sarah Abbott was the first woman to cross in 20:42.

The annual event brings almost 20,000 supporters and runners of all ages who are hot to trot for a good cause.to raise almost a million dollars. "I didn't realize how insane 5k's are and how many people involved, it's awesome for me to see that and just continue to get everyone the opportunity to continue to do what they have been doing the last several years".

And adding to the old tradition is a new one.

"We've had Turkey Trot where it has been hot and raining and cold, you just never know what you are going to get".

And it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without some giving.
