Students in India set university on fire after death

Arson on Sathyabama University campus after girl caught copying kills herself

Arson on Sathyabama University campus after girl caught copying kills herself

Visuals from the university show a blaze in a building on campus with tables and chairs set on fire.

The deceased has been identified as Ragamoulika, a first year BSc Computer Science student and a resident of Hyderabad.

The police said they are investigating the matter. She was reportedly caught cheating in the exam and was called out by the staff and asked to leave the room, which allegedly led her to take the drastic step, reports said.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that the Satyabhama University had to face a situation like this and students, in the past, have protested against several restrictions such as dress code and its regulations on interaction with the other gender to name a few.

Students allege that a first-year student killed herself after being humiliated by a professor for copying in an examination.

According to the sources, the varsity officials barred her from writing exams after she was caught in malpractice in one of the internal exams. Police said that the girl had sent a text to her brother, Rakesh who also studies in the same department in Sathyabama University.

She was found hanging from the ceiling of the room by her room mates. Hostel staff and police were alerted. The body was recovered and sent to the Royapettah Government Hospital for autopsy. The girl's parents have been informed.

Slamming the university for tough curriculum, lack of facilities, and now forcing a student to commit suicide, the rioters burnt mattresses, a tree, and damaged furniture, lights and electrical accessories.
