A damaged building is seen in Pohang, South Korea, on November 15, 2017.

The 5.4-magnitude tremor struck an area, 9 km north of the southeast coastal city of Pohang in North Gyeongsang province at about 2:29 p.m. local time (0529 GMT), according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

No reports have emerged so far about casualties or damage.

Nuclear reactors in the region operated normally when the nation's strongest-ever natural disaster at magnitude 5.8 hit Gyeongju in September 2016. An quake of 5.4 magnitude struck an area in southeast South Korea, the country's weather agency said on Wednesday.

Tremors were felt across the country but operations at nuclear reactors were not affected, the state-run nuclear operator Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co said in a statement.

The weather agency said the seismic center for the initial quake is 36-point-one degrees north latitude and 129-point-37 degrees east longitude.

Photos and video footage sent to local TV stations showed crumbled street walls and furniture violently shaking inside people's homes and people rushing out of buildings in panic.

South Korean officials are assessing the situation.

The nuclear power plant Singori 3 in Ulsan is believed to remain unaffected by the quake.
