Singapore train collides with stationary train leaving 23 injured

The SMRT train collision on Wednesday morning (Nov 15), which saw 25 passengers injured, was the second such incident in the MRT's 30 year history.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) later said it was alerted to the incident at 8.33am.

In a tweet at 8.25am, SMRT said that a "train fault" happened at Joo Koon station. Six members and other seven managerial staff of SMRT's Building and Facilities Maintenance group were found responsible for the maintenance of the pump system, which was related to the incident, according to local media.

It said a faulty west-bound train had stalled at Joo Koon station on the system's East-West line at 8:18am. At 8.20am, the second train moved forward unexpectedly, and came into contact with the first train. A total of 23 people were sent to hospital, most with minor injuries, SCDF said.

The first major collision between MRT trains took place on August 5 1993, when a front-to-back collision occurred between two trains at Clementi MRT station.

"23 passengers and 2 SMRT staff sustained light to moderate injuries, and have been conveyed to Ng Teng Fong Hospital and National University Hospital". Earlier on Wednesday, a commuter by the name of Mei Anne wrote on Facebook that the collision caused her and other passengers to fall on their backs. They are investigating the incident, which took place around Joo Koon station in the western part of the city-state.

The last time that an MRT train collision happened in Singapore was more than two decades ago.
