Sock recorded the United States' first victory at the event for 10 years by defeating Cilic 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the early match, with the Croat later being eliminated by Federer's victory.

Jack Sock has told how three of the world's finest tennis players were left standing outside a London hotel at 4am after a fire alarm went off on Tuesday morning.

"It was a tough one for sure", he said in his post-match interview on court.

Dimitrov marks debut with narrow win over Thiem Grigor Dimitrov made a winning start to his maiden ATP Finals when he outlasted Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-3, 5-7 7-5 in a gripping afternoon duel at the O2 Arena on Monday. "I play a different style and there's always a lot going on, I don't even know what I'm going to do sometimes, it keeps it fun". "It's an wonderful atmosphere, you make me feel like home". The opening match in the Pete Sampras Group produced a feast of stylish backhands from both players but it was Dimitrov, the first Bulgarian to qualify for the tournament in its 48-year-old history, who overcome some late jitters to prevail.

Roger Federer has dismissed Rafael Nadal's claim that it would be fairer if the ATP Tour Finals were played on clay courts.

In doing so, the belief rushed back through the world No. 3 and he set up three set point chances on Federer's serve at 5-6 - converting the third.

Zverev looked as though he had put the disappointment behind him when he jumped out to 40-0 in his next service game, but once again, the forehand errors came to ruin his day and gave Federer five straight points for the double break.

Serve dominated the rest of the set but Cilic edged 4-2 up in the tie-break when the ball struck the net chord and Sock failed to dig it over.

Sock showed the sort of fighting spirit that enabled him to win the Paris Masters title and sneak into the last Finals spot, getting back on serve when Cilic fired a forehand into the tramlines under pressure. Another Cilic shot clipped the tape but this time his opponent was alive to it and flicked it down the line.

Both players held their serve for the remainder of the opening set until the former US Open champion secured a decisive break in the 12th game of the match to take the initiative.
