Giancarlo Stanton Won't Accept Trade To Red Sox, Cardinals

If slugger Giancarlo Stanton is traded this offseason by the Miami Marlins, it won't be to the Boston Red Sox or St. Louis Cardinals, reports the Boston Herald's Chad Jennings.

Stanton trade talk has intensified since the end of the 2017 season, as the Marlins are under new ownership. Interested teams may have expected the Marlins to offer a discount because of Stanton's massive contract, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

While Stanton hit.281 with a whopping 59 home runs and 132 RBI a year ago, Heyman notes that the Red Sox may prefer to sign someone like free agent outfielder J.D. Martinez, who hit 45 homers in just 119 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season.

Stanton, a graduate of Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, has a full no-trade clause, and could attempt to steer discussions toward returning home.

The Dodgers have attempted to avoid long-term commitments. I can't remember the last time a team signed a player to one of those ridiculous deals and the player played for that team for the entire contract and played well and everyone was happy.

Stanton can opt out of his deal in 2020, but if he decides against that, he would be owed $25 million in 2027, when he turns 37.

And it's not happening here either, as the Marlins are looking to unload Stanton.

The Dodgers enter this winter without many glaring needs.
