While the co-op mode is free, and Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis can be played to maximum level, other co-op commanders are limited to level five (you'll need to buy them in order to push them beyond that limit).

Those who wish to experience later chapters in the StarCraft II story can purchase the additional single-player campaigns, Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and Nova Covert Ops, individually ($14.99 Dollars each) or together in the Campaign Collection ($39.99) through the online Blizzard Shop.

Finally, if you already own Wings of Liberty, you can get a free digital copy of the expansion pack Heart of the Swarm - though have only until December 8 to obtain that.

When it comes to Ranked play, you will be able to access this only after you have attained 10 'First Wins of the Day.' These wins have to be either in Versus AI matches or Unranked multiplayer.

You'll need a (free) Battle.net account to play Starcraft II for free.

"StarCraft II is one of the highest-rated PC games of all time, and we're excited to give even more people around the world a chance to find out why it has inspired such a passionate global community", said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "With the massive Wings of Liberty single-player campaign, endlessly replayable co-op mode, prestigious ranked ladder, comprehensive map-making tools, and more, StarCraft II now delivers the ultimate real-time strategy experience completely free".

Players will also get access to all the latest units and balance updates through the latest release in the series, Legacy of the Void.

Play Wings of Liberty for free!

So by and large, the entire game really is free, except for those who want to play the full range of commanders in co-op mode.

If you do not have a Battle.net account, you will need to sign up for one using the registration page. This is only for those who don't already have StarCraft II.

Blizzard has also introduced a "welcome" experience for newbie players with version 4.0 of StarCraft II, which allows you to select your level of RTS experience, with more guidance and introductory videos on hand for true novices. Then, you need to head to the Battle.net Shop and search for the game.
