Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Captain (retd.) Safdar will appear before the Accountability Court today (Wednesday) in corruption cases.

Moreover, Hussain and Hasan Nawaz were declared proclaimed offenders due to their continuous absence.

The court started the trial even though the Islamabad High Court had accepted on Tuesday Sharif's application, in which he had challenged accountability court's refusal to club all three references into one.

As trial proceedings began, Sidra Mansur, Deputy Registrar of Companies, SECP, recorded her statement in the Avenfield flats reference.

The court has reserved the verdict on both pleas and is expected to be announced later in the day. The witness informed the judge that she appeared before the NAB Lahore team on August 18 and furnished all required documents regarding various business of Sharifs.

In his plea, Sharif's lawyer had argued that the Supreme Court's July 28 verdict in the Panama Papers case had not asked the NAB to file the references separately. Sharif said that he wanted to go to London to visit his ailing wife, Kulsoom Nawaz, who is London for cancer treatment.

The former premier and his sons, Hassan and Hussain, have been named in all three NAB references, while Maryam and husband Safdar have been named only in the Avenfield reference.

Maryam and Safdar had been indicted along with Sharif in a reference regarding the London properties on October 19.

The hearing has been adjourned till November 22.

"The records that NAB has presented in court hold my signatures and thumb impressions", Mansoor told the court, adding that, among other things, the records also contained audit reports of the Sharif family's various businesses.

Responding to a journalist's question inside the court about Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan's bail approval by the anti-terrorism court (ATC) yesterday, Nawaz said, "the courts have double standards". Sharif had pleaded not guilty in all the charges.

In an informal chat with media persons outside the court, the former Prime Minister said there should be no double standards in dispensation of justice.

On Nov 8, the accountability court's Judge Muhammad Bashir rejected the Sharif's application for joint trial and framed charges against him in each of the three references.

It was 12th hearing of Avenfield properties and Azizia Steel Mills references and 13th hearing of the Flagship Investment reference.

The anti-graft body was given six weeks, from the date of the apex court's order, to file the reference in an accountability court while the accountability court was granted six months to wrap up the proceedings.

NAB's Rawalpindi branch prepared two references regarding the Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metals Establishment, and the almost dozen companies owned by the Sharif family.
