Boris Johnson to meet with Nazanin's husband this morning

Also attending the meeting at the foreign and commonwealth office in London will be Middle East minister Alistair Burt, who has met Mr Ratcliffe before and visited Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe's family in Tehran, and FCO consular officials who have been providing support to the family.

Ministers say the mother of one was detained in April last year after visiting relatives in Iran and subsequently jailed for five years after being accused of plotting to overthrow the Islamic Republic.

Boris Johnson is set to meet with Richard Ratcliffe, the husband of a British woman jailed in Iran, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.

The meeting comes as Mr Johnson faces calls for his resignation after he suggested to MPs that Mr Ratcliffe's wife, an aid worker, was in Iran to train journalists.

Boris Johnson retracted his statement in the House of Commons yesterday.

Her husband also wants to outline to Mr Johnson the importance of him granting Nazanin diplomatic protection, particularly since the past two weeks has rendered quiet diplomacy no longer an option.

Mr Johnson said: "Yes, of course, I apologise for the distress, the suffering that has been caused by the impression that I gave that the Government believed, that I believed, she was there in a professional capacity". She is now being detained in Iran after being convicted of "spying".

Zaghari-Ratcliffe is said to be close to a nervous breakdown.

Mr Johnson is expected to use the meeting to discuss Mr Ratcliffe's request for his wife to be given diplomatic protection.

This led United Nations human rights experts to express "grave" concerns for her welfare, calling on the Iranian authorities to release her at once.

There have been calls for Johnson to quit in the wake of the gaffe, but Ratcliffe said he should stay and clean up his mess.

It follows an apology by the foreign secretary for "anguish" caused by false remarks he made about the reason for her travels.

The Foreign Secretary has sought advice from officials to determine whether conferring the status would help, including what impact it would have on the support now being provided and the representations already being made on Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe's behalf.

Despite her family pleading for help from the Foreign Office for more than 18 months, Mr Johnson told the foreign affairs committee earlier this month she had been training journalists in Iran.

Asked if he would make the trip to visit the dual British-Iranian national, he replied "of course", adding there were "obvious humanitarian grounds" for Nazanin's release.
