"An order for 430 aircraft is remarkable, but it's particularly gratifying to all of us at Airbus when it comes from a group of airline professionals who know our products as well as the folks at Indigo Partners do". The deal "underscores our optimistic view of the growth potential of our family of low cosr airlines as well as our confidence in the A320neo family as a platform for that growth". The Toulouse-based manufacturer hasn't been able to convince Emirates as of yet to buy more A380 superjumbos.

Even with a massive haul from Indigo, Airbus may not be done at the Dubai event.

The deal marks a major coup for Airbus's Chief Operating Officer John Leahy, who is expected to leave the group soon at the end of a career in which he oversaw the sale of almost 15,000 planes.

Based on the list price of the A320neo, Airbus's best-selling single-aisle jet, the purchase is worth US$49.5 billion before customary discounts. The A320 is the most successful plane model of Airbus which competes with Boeing's 737.

Private equity firm Indigo Partners has signed a memorandum of understanding for 430 Airbus A320neo family aircraft at the Dubai air show. The carriers will begin taking delivery of the aircraft between 2022 and 2026.

It would be the biggest ever order for Airbus and would more than double the value of the company's sales for the year.

Wednesday's historic deal represents a final grand act for Airbus's chief salesman, John Leahy, who plans to retire from the company once a successor is selected.
