Manchester United have an alternative to extending the previously approved four-year deal by the midfielder when he put pen to paper for the Old Trafford outfit following a £28 million move from Athletic Bilbao back in 2014.

Germany worldwide Ozil, 29, has reportedly chose to reject signing a new Arsenal contract, which means he will be free to discuss a Bosman move with foreign clubs from January onwards.

Barcelona reportedly now lead Manchester United in the race for Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann having held secret discussions with the player in recent weeks.

The Sun also said that Atletico Madrid would offer Arsenal a deal worth £200,000 ($262,000) a week, and the 29-year-old star playmaker would also receive a huge signing bonus.

Ozil's future has been a huge talking point for a number of months, with the German having so far refused to sign a new deal at the Emirates. The problem Griezmann has had is that a series of news stories about other important European clubs wanting him has not benefited him.

Despite that, Manchester United and Barcelona are still expected to battle it out to sign the Frenchman in the summer.

Atletico are supposedly only willing to offer Ozil around £200k-a-week to entice him to Spain's capital, and it would be a massive shock to see the former Bayern Munich man head to the continent for only two-thirds of the salary that he wants.

"Both players looked happy here and overall I hope the situation can be turned around".

Atletico Madrid have reportedly made contact with Mesut Ozil over a possible free transfer switch from Arsenal at the end of the season.
