Authorities were aware of a domestic violence incident reported by neighbors that involved the suspected shooter, according to Johnston.

Officials said they recovered a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns from the shooter. There are over 100 law enforcement officers at the school with up to five crime scenes.

Authorities in California say three people have been killed and multiple children have been injured in a number of shootings in California.

Wounded students were medevaced to nearby hospitals. Another was struck by a bullet, while in a auto with a woman, according to Johnston.

Details were still sketchy hours after the shooting and authorities didn't have a firm count of the wounded due to the number of places where the gunman opened fire in the community of Rancho Tehama Reserve, about 210 kilometres north of Sacramento.

Rancho Tehama Elementary is a small school, serving students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Brian Flint said that his neighbor, whom he knows only as Kevin, also stole his truck.

The alleged shooter often fired multiple rounds during the early morning hours, and Flint said living near him was "hell".

"The insane thing is that the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines", neighbor Brian Flint told USA Today. "We made it (known) that this guy is insane and he's been threatening us and everything like that".

Some students at the school were medically evacuated; it's not clear yet how many people were injured in the shooting. "They went around the community shooting at the schools!"
