All of these chemicals can potentially affect infant development.

They conducted a five-month-long study and reported that about 80 percent of the #Baby Food products tested by the researchers had a detectable level of arsenic, lead, and cadmium.

In a study released on Wednesday, Oct. 25, Clean Label Project tested baby food, toddler drinks and snacks, and infant formulas that were bought over the past five months. More than a third of the baby products tested positive for lead.

The World Health Organization reports that arsenic, a toxin commonly found in groundwater, has been associated with cancer, developmental effects in infants, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

While the amounts of each chemical varied with each product, some contained up to 600 parts of arsenic per billion.

"The baby industry needs to do a better job in protecting America's most vulnerable population", Jaclyn Brown, the executive director of the Clean Label Project, told USA Today.

The FDA has recommended a limit of 100 parts per billion of arsenic in infant rice cereal, but has not made its recommendation compulsory for manufacturers.

Out of the products analysed, researchers found that 65 per cent contained arsenic, 58 per cent contained cadmium, 36 per cent contained lead and 10 per cent contained acrylamide.

Low levels of lead in children's blood have been connected to lower IQs, slowed growth, behavioral problems, hearing issues and anemia, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Clean Label Project concluded their findings by identifying the top and bottom five cereals, formulas, snacks, drinks and jar meals in terms of risky chemical contents.

The nonprofit, which advocates for transparent labeling of products, looked at the top-selling formulas and baby food as well as emerging national brands based on Nielsen data.
